We need to keep that in mind when voting at the upcoming Federal election. Your vote is powerful and you need to use it wisely. Australians for Better Government has several ideas when it comes to improving the quality of the vote during elections. You can find our proposals here: Improving the Vote Voter education is also a focus of ABG. Our aim is to increase the voter education of our Members and then for those Members to spread the word to the larger community. Knowing your vote is extremely important. That is why I made the below short video that explains how to vote ahead of this Federal election. Importantly, I have placed special emphasis of having a backstop when voting in the Senate. Voting above the line requires at least 6 numbers and at least 12 numbers below the line when voting in the Senate. This means that you do not have to number every box in the Senate, unlike how you need to in the House of Representatives (small green ballot). Therefore, your vote can exhaust in the Senate if your votes are all eliminated. This is why it is critical to have a backstop with one of the four major parties. Many of our supporters may not like to hear that, but it is critically important to ensuring that your vote counts and you are better represented in the Parliament. Earlier this month, Kevin resigned as President of ABG to focus on his upcoming election campaign. Kevin has been the intellectual powerhouse behind the proposals formulated for ABG. Kevin harboured may of these proposals and reforms prior to ABG’s existence and they have provided the bedrock to our formation. I wish Kevin the best of luck and support for his upcoming election campaign and I have no doubt he will continue to play a major role within ABG going forward. Pressure needs to be applied, as it is likely Senator Babet’s proposal will be resisted based purely on party politics. Senators will not want to support a bill proposed by the United Australia Party. We believe this is contrary to the Senate’s role of being the ‘House of Review’. Senators should be reviewing bills based on the merits of the legislation and the interests of their constituents, rather than what benefits their political party. This is why ABG calls for Party affiliation to be banned in the Senate. It is unnecessary. We encourage all our Members to write to Senators, encouraging them to support Senator Babet’s proposal. It is sad to think that any Australian Senator could vote against such an important referendum proposal. The question of whether to enshrine free speech in the Constitution should be decided by the Australian people, not politicians. Today, Australia is not coping well with the rapid changes that are impacting the Western world and its economies. Some would suggest this inability to cope has been in train for many years and that the seeds for this incapacity were sown at the Federation of 1901 and possibly before because of our colonial legacy. All would agree that an Australia, better governed, would be better able to navigate future challenges which are sure to come. In a more connected world, technology is rapidly advancing; technology that holds great promise but also the possibility of robbing us of our agency, privacy and liberty. It is against this backdrop that the need for ABG was perceived. ABG believes that many of Australia’s future challenges could be better coped with, at all levels of Government within the Commonwealth, if: the electoral system was designed to increase the chances of high-calibre persons being elected to public office; 2. there existed: • a proper separation between the Legislature, Executive and Judiciary, as well as • an effective bicameral system to guard against ill-considered Legislation becoming law; and 3. Constitutions that, besides specifying the structure and mode of operation of our system of democracy, also emphasised the obligation for Government to be the servant of the people. We believe that all Australians, regardless of their political affiliation, will be attracted to this initiative which aims, through consensus and imaginative thought, to create a better democracy; one that will efficiently serve the Australian people well into the future. To be successful in achieving this aspiration, ABG aims to attract like-minded Australians who will, like their predecessors in the 1890’s, and through a series of Constitutional Conventions, give birth to a new Federation: Federation MkII.
