PRESS RELEASE: CRISIS OF CONFIDENCE: Trust in politicians plunges as Australians demand better government and real accountability
The 2026 McKinnon Index confirms what many Australians already know: confidence in politicians and political parties is collapsing. Satisfaction with how democracy works has fallen from 54.5% to 50.7%. Confidence that people can freely express political opinions has dropped nearly 10 points, from 67.9% to 58.1%. For the first time, fewer than half of Australians believe the political system allows people like them to have a say.
