Australians for Better Government Newsletter 14

Earlier this month saw the 50th Anniversary of the dismissal of the Gough Whitlam Government by the then Governor-General, Sir John Kerr.

'The Dismissal' was described as a Constitutional crisis, as it pitted the power of the Governor-General against a sitting Prime Minister and the Government of the day.

A few weeks ago, I spoke with Australian Historian and Political Philosopher, Dr. Christopher Reynolds on the Dismissal. To hear Dr. Reynolds' detailed account of what happened way back in 1975, click below.

Not only did Dr. Reynolds give an account of what happened in 1975, but he also went deeper into the origins of the Constitution and explained why the Governor-General had originally been given the powers to dissolve the Parliament.

This can all be traced back to Andrew Inglis Clark and his original draft of the Constitution, which formed the basis of the final document that was adopted for Federation.

Importantly, Dr. Reynolds explained how Andrew Inglis Clark's original version closely resembled the American system, rather than the British Westminster system.

Dr. Reynolds then went on to reveal evidence that he has just uncovered that suggests extra sections of the Constitution were added, which eroded the intended separation of powers, including the authority of the Governor-General and the Executive branch.

This includes, but is not limited to, the 'Ministers to sit in Parliament' line in Section 64 that mandates that Ministers in the Executive are to be selected from the Legislative branch - therefore mudding the waters between the two branches of Government.

Of course, ABG advocates for this to be addressed, by allowing the Australian people to elect the Governor-General and also by removing the 'Ministers to sit in Parliament' line in Section 64.

I strongly encourage you to watch my interview with Dr. Christopher Reynolds as his account further explains why our system of Government is dysfunctional and why it needs reform.

Of course, our movement will only grow with your support. If you haven’t already, please consider becoming an ABG Member - click here

The more members we have, the stronger and more persuasive our movement will be.

Many thanks,

Steven Tripp - ABG President

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST

Australians for Better Government is excited to announce that it is our intention to launch an ABG Youth Movement.

The group will be open to anyone under the age of 21 and will start off being regular Zoom meetings, where Youth Members can interact with an expert of a particular field.

Topics of discussion will relate to Australian History, the Constitution and Civics (the study of the rights and duties of citizenship, including how governments work and how individuals can participate in their community).

We believe in and have faith in our Youth. ABG feels that this will be a beneficial platform to encourage our Youth to begin to think about the future of Australia and what better Government might look like for all generations.

We are currently taking expressions of interest. If you know of anyone under 21 that would be interested, please email: info@australiansforbetter.com and we will be in touch.
